One of Our Family Traditions – Annual Reunions: A Journey of Togetherness

family traditions

Family traditions hold a special place in our hearts, providing us with a sense of belonging and continuity. One of the greatest traditions in our family is the annual family reunion, a cherished event that has brought four generations together since 2015. Every year, on the first weekend of August, we gather in a large rented house in the Pocono Mountains PA or upstate New York areas, where we spend 3-4 days reconnecting, reminiscing, and simply enjoying each other’s company. This tradition has evolved over the years, creating memories that we all hold dear.

The Origin of Our Family Reunion Tradition

Our family reunion tradition began when my grandfather was still with us. It was his idea to gather the entire family—his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—for a weekend. Although my grandfather has since passed away, the tradition he started continues to thrive. Over the years, we’ve welcomed new family members, including a little one who was just five months old during this year’s reunion.

Expanding the Family Tradition

For two years, we were fortunate to have my grandfather’s brother’s family of 12 join us for the reunion. Although coordinating with extended family across the U.S. became challenging after COVID, those two years were truly special. The logistics of finding enough space for everyone meant renting multiple houses in the same area, but the effort was worth it to see so many loved ones in one place.

The Logistics of Planning Our Family Reunion

Planning an annual family reunion for 18 people requires organization and teamwork. Over the years, we’ve developed a system that makes the logistics easier, but finding the perfect house remains a challenge.

Finding the Perfect Accommodation

Every year, we search for a house that can comfortably accommodate our large family (we usually use AirBnB or VRBO). We prioritize properties with ample outdoor space for meals and campfires, and ideally, a pool or access to a lake. In the past, we’ve stayed in a beautiful lakeside house, but as our family grew, we needed more space and had to look for bigger homes. Some years, we’ve found houses with great outdoor activities like paddleboards and kayaks, which the kids love. This year, the house had a pool, and some family members enjoyed a trip to a nearby zoo.

Organizing Meals and Activities

Meal planning is another crucial aspect of our reunion. We’ve almost perfected the system, with each family responsible for specific meals. The kids, now teens and young adults, have taken on the task of preparing lunch for everyone, a tradition they’ve embraced over the last three years. Meal responsibilities also include setting the table and cleaning up afterward, fostering a sense of responsibility and teamwork among everyone.

Choosing bedrooms is an ever-evolving process. We consider factors like accessibility for older family members, convenience for those with young children, and the need for space for the night owls who stay up late playing games and socializing.

Family Bonding Through Games and Music

One of the most cherished aspects of our family reunions is the time we spend playing games, making music together, and engaging in our cherished family traditions. These activities are not just about entertainment; they are crucial for fostering deep connections and creating lasting memories. The interactions we have during these moments are what truly make our family reunions special.

Every evening, after a day filled with various activities, we gather together for game time. This tradition has become a highlight of our reunions. The games we play are not just about winning or losing but about engaging with one another in a way that strengthens our bond as a family. We’ve played everything from the classic charades to the more intense Mafia game, which has become a favorite, especially as the younger generation grows up. The thrill of the game, the laughter, and the light-hearted teasing all contribute to a sense of unity that carries us through the years.

Mafia, in particular, has evolved with us. As the kids grow older, the game has become more competitive and strategic, making it even more fun. It’s fascinating to see how the dynamics shift each year, reflecting how much we’ve all grown and changed. This year, we also introduced Code Names, which quickly became a hit, adding a new layer of fun to our evenings.

But it’s not just games that bring us together. Music plays a significant role in our reunions. There’s something magical about sitting around a fireplace (or, as was the case this year due to rain, in the living room), singing songs from our childhood. These songs carry memories of our past, and singing them together helps us reconnect with those memories and with each other. The guitar strumming in the background, the familiar melodies, and the harmonizing voices create an atmosphere of warmth and togetherness.

The most important aspect of these activities is the interaction they foster. It’s not about the games themselves or the songs we sing; it’s about the moments of connection we create. These interactions, whether they’re filled with laughter, friendly competition, or shared memories, are the essence of our family reunions. They remind us of the love and support we have for one another, even when life pulls us in different directions.

One of the most cherished aspects of our family reunions is the time we spend playing games, making music together, and engaging in our cherished family traditions. The interactions we have during these moments are what truly make our family reunions special.

Our family reunions are a time to pause, reconnect, and celebrate the relationships that mean the most to us. The games and music are just the vehicles for this connection; the real magic lies in the way we interact with one another, deepening our bonds and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The Impact and Importance of Our Family Traditions: Annual Reunion

These reunions are more than just a few days of vacation—they are a time to reconnect, share stories, and watch the younger generation grow. The laughter, conversations, and shared experiences create a deep sense of belonging and continuity. Although we may feel tired and overwhelmed by the end of the weekend, the effort is always worth it.

This year, in an unprecedented move, my cousin found an amazing house for our 2025 reunion less than a week after we returned. We’re already looking forward to another year of making memories together!

Embracing the Tradition of Togetherness

I am incredibly grateful for this family tradition. No matter how busy or chaotic our lives become, we all make it a priority to set aside a few days each year to spend quality time together. These reunions have become a cornerstone of our family life, reminding us of the importance of staying connected and celebrating the love that binds us. I look forward to many more years of this cherished tradition and the memories we will continue to create together.
